Murder in the Street of Baktuphur
This is the second installment revisiting some of the experiences I captured in my book “Tenacity” which is where my TRIP System was born. I got several emails from folks who were enjoying them…thank you!
After spending a quick two days in Kathmandu with my friend Lava, a plan came together that he was less than enthusiastic about. I chose to trek to Mt. Kanchenjunga in the northeastern region of Nepal. He said it was near the Indian border and unsafe…I told him that I had faith and knew I would be alright and went about getting things ready to go.
This new plan meant that I would lose three days to travel before my actual trek would begin, but it looked promising with adventure and new experiences…I had no idea how much that would turn out to be true.
The next day I boarded a six-passenger, single engine plane that was at least thirty years old. Since I was late and the last one to arrive, I had to sit in what is commonly known as a jump seat in the entrance well. It folded down and I sat next to the door. This turned out to a wonderful spot because we were headed east and went right past Mt. Everest. I could see the base camp below as we whizzed by. What wasn’t so wonderful were the air currents near the big mountain were terrible and the little plane was thrown about violently for most of the hour-long flight. I thought sure it would come apart at any minute, it creaked, popped, and groaned the whole time. The airport had one dirt/grass runway and we circled it twice while they got the grazing cattle off the landing area.
I spend the night with Suba and his wife, a cousin of my Nepali friend in the States Sam Shrestha. I didn’t get much sleep as there was a murder outside his home during the night. Some poor chap was stabbed and robbed.
Overcoming fear at times like this requires a lot of resilience. Because my imagination was working overtime on all of the bad things that could go wrong. The warning about the crime in the region, not knowing much about where I was going or how I was going to get there.
Funny thing about imagination. How in one moment it can help you immensely in creating a solution, and in the next scare you to death with fears about a possible situation. The positive and negative a wrapped up in one gift. I was getting a good dose of resilience and imagination and they were showing up in my journal more and more each day.
Some more about my trip in the next newsletter.
Remember to take a TRIP for a lifetime, not a trip of a lifetime.
